Virtual Volunteering in the Bay Area

With so much of our lives now conducted remotely, including jobs, events, and even digital banking via our app or website, you can now make a difference in the world from the comfort of your couch.

Virtual volunteering affords volunteers the opportunity to support their favorite local or national organizations from anywhere in the world by doing it virtually. Also known as online volunteering, remote volunteering, or e-volunteering, virtual volunteering has caught on in the Bay Area.

Visit VolunteerMatch for a full list of virtual volunteering options. Here are some additional exciting opportunities to help out locally from home:

Food Banks

Food Banks of Contra Costa & Solano, San Francisco-Marin Food Bank, and Second Harvest of Silicon Valley Food Bank (San Mateo and Santa Clara counties) invite volunteers to host virtual food and fund drives. Volunteers create a team page with a sharable link so that friends, family, and colleagues can make secure online donations.

Elderly and Homebound

Provide companionship and emotional support to the elderly or those who are homebound by phone or through mail. Little Brothers – Friends of the Elderly asks volunteers to make phone calls to the elderly to brighten their days. Or, if you’re feeling crafty, Meals on Wheels San Francisco accepts greeting cards for homebound seniors in addition to friendly social calls if you prefer to chat.

Children

Reading Partners SF Bay Area and Silicon Valley offers online tutoring to local kids. No prior tutoring experience is needed, and Reading Partners will provide training and materials.

Wigs for Kids accepts hair donations to create wigs for children who have conditions that cause hair loss. Donations are accepted across the San Francisco Bay Area. Click to find a local donation specialist.

Pets

Help shelter animals get adopted by becoming a foster animal parent in your own home. Many animals up for adoption from shelters have never lived in a home environment or need time to reacclimate to home sounds, sights, and smells before they will be ready for adoption. Foster animal parents help them get ready to find their forever home. Sign up to foster an animal through the SF SPCA, East Bay SPCA, or Furry Friends Rescue, or contact your local shelter to inquire about opportunities.
