Pleasanton Chamber Awards Good Turns
FREMONT, California (November 30, 2007) - A Pleasanton Chamber of Commerce dinner will honor East Bay philanthropists and install five new 2008 board members Nov. 30.
Vic Malatesta, owner of Vic's All Star Kitchen, will be sworn in as board chairman. New board members are Roy Cook, Robert Half International Inc.; Julie Arca, AT&T Inc.; Tom Powers, California Financial Advisors; and Ted Kaye, Las Positas College Foundation.
Fremont Bank will receive the chamber's business service award for providing philanthropic service beyond the scope of normal business. The bank has donated more than $60,000 to the Pleasanton Spirit Run, and has raised another $60,000 for the event. It sponsored a new scoreboard for Amador Valley High School. It also supplies local volunteers and, through its foundation, granted $450,000 to other local organizations.
"Contributing to communities in which the bank does business has been an essential part of the business' philosophy since its start," said Hattie Hyman Hughes, president of Fremont Bank Foundation. "My father, (the bank's founder) was very committed to giving back to communities. He really believed that our success came through people being of support to us and that we really need to return that to them. That's my philosophy too," she said.
The Parkview assisted living facility will receive a business-development award for making a positive impact in the Pleasanton community in the scope of normal business. Its below-market-rate program helps seniors qualify for apartments at The Parkview at a reduced rate, allowing them access to The Parkview's meals, activities, transportation, and care-giving services.
The chamber will recognize the nonprofit Hope Hospice for its philanthropic efforts in Pleasanton. The hospice provides end-of-life care to hundreds of patients and their families, regardless of ability to pay.
Chuck Deckert's contributions in Pleasanton will be highlighted with the chamber's individual award. Deckert has been involved with numerous associations including St. Vincent de Paul, the Rotary Club of Pleasanton, Friends of Pleasanton Seniors and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, for which he raised $20,000 in the past two years. He currently serves on several community organizations' boards.
